Heritage Aluminium Windows & Doors Installed in East Sussex

The main property was a stunning, traditional cottage featuring classic timber windows with a single horizontal Georgian bar, characteristic of many cottages in the area. Typically, these buildings have low level, small windows that suit their historic charm but don’t always offer the light or functionality desired today.

For the outbuilding, the client wanted to keep the cottage’s theme and character while introducing a more modern, practical solution. Having already experienced the quality and performance of Smarts Heritage Aluminium in previous installations, they decided this was the ideal product once again.

Blending Cottage Charm with Contemporary Style

While the aesthetic brief was clear, this project presented a unique technical challenge. The outbuilding was constructed using exposed oak beams as the primary framework. Oak is a beautiful, natural material, but it’s also prone to seasonal movement, expanding in wet and cold conditions and shrinking when the weather is warm and dry.

Installing aluminium windows and doors into such a dynamic material required a bespoke approach to ensure durability, performance, and a perfect seal regardless of the season.

Flexible Sealing and Thoughtful Design

To tackle the oak’s tendency to expand and contract, we used a specialist flexible, expanding tape to seal the aluminium frames to the timber. This tape adapts to changes in the oak, ensuring a weather tight seal in all conditions.

We also designed the fixing points to accommodate movement between the oak and aluminium, preventing stress on the frames and preserving the integrity of both materials. This allowed us to install the windows and doors securely while respecting the unique characteristics of the building.
