In the last five years, we have become a nation of improvers, opting to invest in improving our property instead of move. In fact, since 2013, where only three in one hundred property owners were investing in their properties, there has been a 400 per cent increase in those of us applying for planning and extension permissions; we now see in access of fifteen in one hundred of us applying.

This shift in thinking has come for a series of reasons, but most are attributed to consistently high properties prices, avoiding stamp duty and sluggish property markets. The most likely reason for the want of home renovation is increasing space. Loft conversion and living room extensions are the main applications being made by UK residents. However, there are alternatives when it comes to adding space and style to your existing home. We’ve shared some of these ideas here.

Veranda

Want some more living or relaxing space outside your property to keep furniture or set up a relaxing space? Then why not invest in a stylish veranda? You won’t need planning permission or an extensive amount of time. The right veranda with the right fittings can be a cost effective and practical home improvement.

A Porch

Different to a veranda, as they are generally enclosed, the porch can be added to the front or the rear of your property and could free up some valuable space.

Rearrange your coat, and shoe wracks to keep them out of main living spaces and shut them away in your new porch. You can choose the style of your porch and have them suit your desired aesthetic.

Orangery

If it’s an extra living internal living space you’re looking for, have you considered a glass orangery? In some cases, you might not even need planning permission for your new orangery. Conservatories are considered “permitted developments”. These rights derive from parliament authority, so, therefore, are not granted by the local authority. These rights do not apply for flats, maisonettes or other buildings.

Clean or Replace the Guttering

Damage or dirtied guttering is not only visually off-putting; it can become a real issue if your draining is being affected by a build-up of moss or dirt. Sometimes, when your guttering gets to a state of damage, it will need to be replaced.
