How to Clean UPVC Window Frames

Over time, especially when your uPVC windows are white, your window sills can gather dirt and discolour. When you are looking not only to have gleaming windowpanes but window sills, there are a few techniques you can try to keep them brighter for longer.

There may be significant dirt and grime build-up, and this might force you to buy more ‘specialist’ products to restore it to its previous state.

How to Best Clean your uPVC Window Frames with Specialist Products

What you’ll need to be able to achieve this:

  • uPVC Restorer (there are various brands available)
  • two or more clothes
  • a sponge and a bucket full of water

Steps to Cleaning:

  • First, wash down your frames with the sponge and water.
  • Make sure that you are cleaning off all surface grease and dirt before using the restorer.
  • Having cleaned off grease and dirt, apply a small amount of restorer onto a damp cloth
  • Apply to a small section at a time rubbing in firmly. Once you have applied the solution, buff it off by using a dry cloth.
  • Repeat this the whole way across the uPVC windowsill and the cross-sections.
  • Ensure you are avoiding the use of any bleach-based products
  • Once buffed off, your job is done!

While using a uPVC restorer, do your best to not work in direct sunlight as this can cause the solution to dry out too quickly. When the restorer dries too quickly, it will become much more difficult to buff off. If you have no choice but to work in direct sunlight, apply on a smaller area and aim to buff it off immediately.

In addition, as a best practise, you should always consult your installer or refer your maintenance guide before applying any product.

What you’ll need to be able to achieve this:

  • A mixture of one cup’s worth of vinegar and four cups worth of hot (not boiling) water poured into a spray bottle.
  • A cloth.

Steps to Cleaning:

  • Take your spray bottle, full of your vinegar-water mixture, and spray onto your uPVC frames.
  • Allow the solution to stand on the frames for ten minutes.
  • Once the ten minutes is up, take your cloth and wipe down any remaining damp surfaces. Work the cloth around the frame to buff the uPVC.

What to Avoid when Cleaning uPVC Frames

Try to avoid using alternative cream-cleaners as they end up leaving a lot of residue across your frames. Additionally, it would help if you avoided any abrasive or overly harmful scourers or sponges; needless to say, these are likely to damage your surface. They could take the top layer of uPVC off completely, exposing them to further damage or marking.
