Double-Glazing Vs. Triple Glazing
If you’re trying to decide between getting double or triple-glazed windows to increase your
homes’ thermal rating, here are the differences:
Double Glazed – Double-glazed windows use glass of about 16mm thickness, utilising two
panes instead of the usual single pane. The two panes of glass have a little gap in between –
sometimes filled with gas – that insulates your home from the outside cold and helps to
prevent heat from escaping.
Triple-glazed windows use the same idea as double-glazed, but they use
three panes of glass instead of two, creating two insulating barriers to maximise the
heat-loss and sound-minimisation effects.
Choosing Window Materials
When designing your energy efficient windows, it’s important to consider every material that
is used to create the biggest impact in your home. From the glass to the pane spacers, each
aspect makes a difference.
For the highest thermal rating, you should choose low emissivity glass, which also usually
has a coating of metal oxide that’s completely invisible. The most efficient windows will also
contain gas between the panes, such as xenon, argon, or krypton. The pane spacers around the edges of the inside of your window panes should be ‘warm edge’ spacers, which are made out of very little or no metal.
