How can I make my doors and windows more energy efficient?

With the cost of living increasing, it is crucial to save money wherever possible! Research has shown that roughly 10-20% of a home’s heating is lost through old and inefficient windows and doors. This guide will take you through tips on how to make your windows and doors more energy efficient, saving you money and keeping you that little bit warmer in the winter months!

Check for air leaks.

Checking for air leaks may sound simple but it is so worth doing as if you find a leak, it could save you a considerable amount of money throughout the year. Firstly, start off by going outside and checking for holes and cracks from where the building meets the window or door. If you can’t see any obvious signs of an air leak, go inside and feel for cold air around the window or door frame. If you do find an air leak, you can easily repair it with a DIY job, however, bear in mind this will only be a temporary fix.

Draught proof!

It’s a good idea to search around your home for any draughts. You may find these around doors and windows and even near the letterbox. You can improve the amount of cold air coming in or warm air escaping by draught proofing. For standard windows and doors, purchase foam or rubber self adhesive strips to stick between the window and the frame to seal the gap. For sliding doors and sash windows, brush seals are more suitable. For internal doors, try using draught blockers at the base of the door.

Close your curtains!

One of the cheapest and most effective ways to stop warm air escaping through your windows is to close your curtains and blinds at night. You may find if your window is above a radiator, a considerable amount of heat will be lost through the window. It is also a great idea to purchase a door curtain for your front or back door. They can be a great addition, not only for keeping the warm air inside, but for style.

Upgrading your windows and doors

If you are noticing a considerable amount of heat is being lost through the windows and windows built into doors, it may be worth investing in a replacement. There are three main window options to consider, including, double glazing, triple glazing and energy rated windows. These provide exceptional insulation properties, helping you save money on heating bills over the cold winter months and keeping the hot air out on a hot summer’s day.
